How To Remove Rust From Gun Barrels [Inner & Surface Rust]?

March 2, 2022 by admin Leave a Comment

It is important that you keep your gun barrel clean on a regular basis as any rust or residues of impurities may cause the gun to malfunction. Hence, you should take a bit of time to clean your gun barrel before using it.

In order to start the rust cleaning process, you will need to do two things. First, you need to closely look at the gun barrel to see whether the amount of rust is heavy or not. Depending on the rust amount, you will need to follow the cleaning process.

Secondly, you have to make sure that the chamber is clear and also you will need to disassemble the gun to clean the rust from every corner of the barrel. So, I will try to explain all the necessary steps to remove rust from both the surface and inside of the gun barrel.

How To Clean The Surface Rust Of The Gun Barrel?

To remove the rust you will need these 3 things:

  • A Cleaner Lubricant & Preservative (CLP)
  • A penny or a brush
  • And a rag.

If you have a light amount of rust on the surface of the gun barrel, following steps would be enough to clean the rust:

Step 1: Apply a good amount of gun oil (CLP) on the surface of your gun or rifle barrel and let it set for a few minutes.

Step 2: Then take a penny and hold it between your pointer finger and thumb. Now start moving the penny lightly on the barrel. You can also use a brush instead of a penny.

Step 3: Next, when you see that the rust is coming off, take a rag and wipe the surface of the barrel. You can repeat the process as long as the rust is not completely removed from the barrel.

However, don’t forget to dry the barrel before you start assembling your gun again.

What Should You Do If The Surface Rust Is Heavy On The Gun Barrel?

You are reading this part because you have heavy rust on the surface of your gun barrel. You will have to add Steel wool or Copper Wool to your list of necessary elements and you are good to go with the cleaning process.

Step 1: You would need to complete the steps that are discussed to remove the light amount of rust. This will make your cleaning process much easier.

Step 2: After completing the first step, you would need steel wool or copper wool to rub on the rust area of the barrel. But make sure the wool is not coarse, otherwise, it will damage the surface of the gun.

Final Step: You can also apply extra CLP on those specific areas and then rub the surface. In either case, when you are done removing the rust, clean the barrel with a piece of cloth.

What Can Be An Alternative To CLP To Remove Rust From A Gun Barrel?

To remove rust, especially the heavy rust, you can use vinegar if you can’t manage CLP. As the vinegar is acidic, it will effortlessly break down the rust formation from the barrel. So, you won’t need to invest a lot of time and energy for the work.

Besides, vinegar is cheap and easily available, it will make the cleaning process fast and relaxed.

How To Remove Rust From The Inside Of A Gun Barrel?

Below is the list of elements that you will need to clean the rust from inside:

  • A bore solvent
  • A cleaning rod
  • One bronze brush (that will fit the size of the barrel)
  • Cleaning patches
  • Gun oil

Cleaning Steps:

Start by soaking the bronze brush in the bore solvent and then attach the brush to the cleaning rod. Now, push the brush from the chamber to the muzzle, repeat the process several times and then let the barrel rest for five minutes.

Take a cleaning patch and attach it to the cleaning rod. Push the rod through the barrel to clean the dirt, repeat the step as long as it doesn’t completely clean out.

Next you have to soak a large patch in the bore solvent and attach it to the rod. This time you would need to push and twist the rod through the barrel because it will make sure that the bore has been applied thoroughly to your gun or rifle barrel.

Now you should let the barrel rest for 10 minutes. After the rest, again take a clean patch and clean the inside of the barrel by attaching it to the rod. Keep repeating the process until you are sure that there is no dirt or rust left.

To finish it up, you need to soak a patch in gun oil and attach it to the rod. Run the rod through the barrel a few times. This will provide a protective coating to the barrel which will save it from rusting in future.

How Can You Polish A Gun Barrel?

Now that the cleaning is done, giving it a nice polish is always worth it. In order to polish a gun barrel, you are going to need two things:

  • Gun polishing substance, like Flitz gun polish
  • A bronze brush

First, apply a bit of gun polish in a bronze brush and run it from the endpoint of the barrel to the muzzle. You would need to repeat the process as long as you don’t get your desired finish.

Conclusion

Cleaning a gun or a rifle barrel is not a difficult procedure to follow, you just need to give some time and have some patience throughout the steps. But it is essential that you do keep your guns and rifles rust free or else you may face serious safety issues while using the gun.

Hence, you are advised to follow the cleaning steps now and then. This will save you from falling into an accident or damage your endearing guns entirely.
